With the news just being released that either Kitesurfing or Windsurfing is going to be included as a boardsport class in the Rio 2016 Olympics depending on site suitability, it looks pretty certain that Kitesurf Course Racing will be chosen due to the ideal location and big sandy beaches. Of course the other plus point is Kites featuring in the offical banner of the Rio Olympics. With the new box rule also recently being announced and production only boards from 2012, I think we will see a big increase at race events both in the UK and around the World next year. Winter is now properly here in Cornwall, with it getting dark early and the temperature dropping. Gales and huge swells are consistantly pounding the shore pushing my focus back to Wave riding and pursuing my goal of riding the biggest waves possible with a kite. So far I have riddden what has to be my biggest waves in the Northern Hemisphere at Gwithian a few weeks ago at roughly 4-5 times overhead and winter has only just begun. Look out for the pics in the next issue of Kiteworld magazine! Working alongside Supersaturated TV from Plymouth we are making a UK Wave riding video this winter, which entails riding the best spots all over the country. In between the waves I am back in training, in the gym, swimming and doing Yoga, (thanks to Cornwall Sports Partnership for allowing me free access to Penwith Lesuire centres) preparing for next seasons racing which will soon be upon us in March. I am also looking for Sponsors to help me compete in The ISAF Course Racing Worlds in Germany, The Course Race Europeans, The Kite Tour Europe and The PKRA World Tour of which I plan to do several race and wave events. ![]() Callum receiving his prize Pasty Adventures Racing Saturday 14th August saw the first Pasty Adventures race day at Newlyn, Penzance. With 7 of the country’s top racers coming to kitesurf in Cornwall and a Northerly force 6 blowing, the action was intense. With Lee’s dad acting as race officer along with several helpers on board their fishing boat, a lengthy upwind downwind course was set with the start/finish line half way up the beat acting as a gate. Using 10 & 11 meter kites and the new breed of wide boards from North, speeds were well above 30knts for the guys at the front with some spectacular wipeouts coming from the guys towards the back as they were trying to stay in touch with the top 3. Taking the prize Pasty and continuing his winning ways from the BKSA Barrow event was Callum Edge with 3 firsts and 2 seconds, proving that time on the water and practising with the new wider boards is key to winning races. Denzil Williams was not far behind with a couple of firsts and organiser Lee Harvey snapping at their heels in 3rd but slightly lacking pointing ability upwind. A great success and a valuable training session for the UK’s top racers, Pasty Adventures will be running many more in the run up to the 2011 Course Race Worlds in Tarifa. Big thanks to Mike Harvey for providing the committee boat and setting the course, Adam Harvey for time keeping, Dave Scooby for flags and Joe Cockle for camera and video. Thanks to support and prizes from North Kiteboarding, Westcountry Watersports, Gul, Freeriders surf shop and 9 Bar. Stay tuned to www.pastyadventures.co.uk for all your kitesurf needs in Cornwall, the next race day and much more coming up in the autumn, including wave clinics, guiding, surf coaching and adventures. Edge Race Cup 06/22/2010
This weekend saw the Edge Race Cup, hosted by 3 time world champ, Steph Bridge. A light forecast didnt deter 24 entrants from across the country. Saturday started with light winds so SUP racing was the go. After casually paddling through the early rounds I had to put some effort in in the final with the tide starting to rip through abd managed to take the win from North rep Callum. After lunch the wind picked up slighty, just enough for 2 races at around 8knts but I couldn't keep up with the lightweigts. Sunday wasn't muc different with the light Northerly breeze being cancelled out by the sea breeze which eventually won over and racing started with around 8 knts of breeze again. Struggling to keep pace upwind, even with nailing the starts I was off the pace. 3 races were run and I managed 4th overall with my 85kgs against the next lightest of 72. For the long distance races the wind slightly filled in and without the need to go upwind, my training paid off and I comfortably took the win. Thanks to Steph and the Edge team for organising a fun weekend.
