1st Kite & 3rd overall Legend of the Bay

Super pleased to win the Kitesurfing and place 3rd overall at the BKSA/BSUPA Legend of the Bay event this weekend at Watergate Bay, Cornwall.
This is the 2nd time this event as run and as in 2013 I won the kite side but this time I was really gunning for the overall title after practicing a fair bit the last month on my new Fanatic Allwave 8'5 sup.

The Kiting started on Saturday in dead offshore wind gusting from 15-35 mph and small waves. It really did show how far the kites have come, as we were able to ride no problem and as lots of people commented, 'you even managed to make it look good'. I won all of my heats to make it to the final which was put on hold until the next day as the tide got too high with the wind shadow from the cliffs.

Sunday and the predicted swell had kicked in with a slight side off breeze. First up was round 1 and 2 of the sup before the wind picked up just enough to run the kite finals. It was fairly tricky with 12-15mph of slight side on wind and double overhead sets. I managed to get a couple of good waves though with some nice turns riding the Neo 9m while Josh rode to 2nd using an 18!
It was now down to the business end of the comp with all the overall contenders still in and pumped with the swell getting bigger and heavier all the time.

As it turned out to get through the sup heats you needed a bit of luck on your side as the conditions were tricky to say the least with 8-10ft close out sets washing though meaning that no one had an easy ride and even the eventual winner only just scraped through in 2nd place in his quarter and semi final heats. Still I was pretty pleased with how I went winning my round 3 heat but unable to find a 2nd wave in the quarters after a big closeout left me paddling for the next 10 minutes. This left me in 3rd overall with 10 points.

Congratulations to Dave Ewer winning the sup who nailed some crazy close out smacks in the final and Dom Moore and Josh Coombes for joint 1st overall with both on 6 points and tied even after count back!
Well done to the BSUPA & BKSA crew for running a good event in testing conditions and Ben from K38 for rescue cover.

Thanks to North Kiteboarding for making the best kites, JP and Inlayz for the best boards, O'Neill for the greatest wetsuits, Fanatic and K66 for the great SUP kit, Satorial supplies for the accessories(the leashes certainly had their work cut out!) and Supersaturated for keeping me looking good on land.
Next comp is the English Surf Nationals, lets hope its pumping :)

Thanks to Keira Ridel for the pics.

1st Kitesurf BKSA Legend of the Bay

The weekend saw a new event from the BKSA teaming up with BSUPA- Legend of the Bay at Watergate Bay, Cornwall. Combined points from kitesurf wave comp and sup wave comp to give overall title of Legend of the Bay.
Saturday saw 20mph of Northerly wind giving crosshore conditions with a confused 2-4 ft wave. Using the 2013 Rebel 10m & Xsurf 5'10, I was happy to take the win for the kitesurfing with Danny Morrice (rrd) fresh of his 5th place at PKRA Dakhla in 2nd and local Dom Moore (Ocean Rodeo) in 3rd.

Sunday and we awoke  to light winds and a small clean wave at high tide. By the time we started at 9.30 the dropping tide and increasing sw wind had turned the surf to absolute dribble. Oh well needent had bothered practicing for 2 months especially as I had pro suppers in my heats with Ruebs winning my first heat & Lee winning my next heat before they went onto the final placing 2nd & 3rd with Alex winning.
Dom Moore had the luck of the draw with only other kitesurfers in his heat and grabbed the only 2 good waves to win and move straight to round 3 which with Neal Gent going out was enough to win the Legend of the Bay Title.
Big congrats for keeping the title in Cornwall ;)
The womens title went to Keira from Norfolk.

Well done to all and a great turn out with 24 kiters and 22 suppers.
Big congrats for great organisation and judging from the combined efforts of BKSA & BSUPA. Was a lot of fun learning to ride one of the small sups.

Thanks to my sponsors - North, ION, Freeriders & Pasty Adventures
And big thanks to Pete from Westcountry Watersports for the loan of the SUP.

Next up is my event The Pasty Cup, round 1 of the British racing championship tour on the 25-26th May at Marazion.

2nd at BKSA Watergate shambles

This weekend saw the BKSA Round 2 of the Racing and a Wavejam at Watergate Bay, Cornwall.
After the last event in Clacton and the poor organisation we were all hoping for something better at Watergate. Turning up early to find no boat and only 2 guys on the race crew plus a jetski and driver left us all a bit bewildered as to how it was gonna run?
well it did run but only just witha total mess up of the racing in onshore 18knt wind with 6 ft waves. after needing to adjust the start they then put the flag up while all but 1 of us were on the beach as we were told the start line was being moved due to it being in amongst the breaking waves and dangerous on our big boards with big fins. 4 of us then sailed the course within all the time limits due to being able to cross the line from the beach! we then did 2 more races and came in to be told only 1 Ollie Bridge finished. the race was later scrapped at a same as everytime meeting afterwards in the pub.
onto the wave jam and with the judges not really knowing what they were meant to be doing and scoring on we eventually settled with a overall impression wave jam with 3 heats of 6 and a 6 man final.
i won with some strapless trickery including some back loop kiteloops and a nice jesus walk and a few turns in the onshore on the 9 rebel and 6'0 wam.
that night we went to the pub and after a meeting had a burger paid for by the BKSA. nice one ;)
Sunday came and windy around 28knts onshore and 6-8ft mess. at the briefing Racing was called off and it was said wavejam same as saturday with 20min heats. being the first to pump up my 9 rebel i got ready and asked the race crew when my heat was only to find out off another rider i wasnt even down?
couldnt believe it so ran over to Dickie and said 'whats the hell is goign on' to him then flipping a coin and putting me in the heat starting in 2 mins.
couldnt believe it but ran and got in amongst it.
i pulled some more trickery and a nice few waves with a backroll off the lip even, only to find out i had come 4th in my heat?
after i asked what was going on and seeing some of the scores for just going along no turns from the others, found out they were judging wave riding today as it was bigger.
'what' shouldnt they have said at the briefing.
that was then it for the day at just after 12pm when we should of been kiting as it was windy. there wasnt even anything for the paper when they came at 12.30.

well ended up 2nd in both the racing and waves after a really poor event and think I will just concentrate on the KSP World Tour, where its done properly from now on.
had a sick surf monday to make up for it on the 6'.
Bring on Guincho ferry out 22nd may. ye ha
video from this weeks all time sessions coming soon. new Resin8 surfboards kite models going sick!

3rd BKSA Course Racing Watergate

So first event of the year was run fri , sat, sunday and suprise suprise, no wind.
Even with the dismal forecast 15 riders still made the journey down, all kitted up with the latest course boards and kites ready to show off their hard winter training.
Friday and the wind was dead offshore but around 10knts so after a press release for the launch of kitesurfing in the UK we all headed out to start race 1. With a shifting breeze the course had to be adjusted and by the time it was ready for us to start the wind switched off and we all had to be rescued.
I was feeling pretty confident with my speed against the others though and keen for more wind over the weekend.
Well a gentle sea breeze did come in and averaged at 6mph on saturday. 2 races were held but i was so underpowered on the North ltd while Denzil and Jason were flying on there big wide boards.
Was pleased with my starts but had my soul destroyed as both races they flew past pointing 30 degrees higher upwind!
New boards on the way so should not be a problem for the next event. Still 3rd is ok to use as a discard!
Going to keep the training up so i can continue on my quest for 2 British Titles this year, Waves and Racing!
Thanks to my sponsors for their continuing support, North, Resin8, Freeriders and West and most of all my family and amazing girlfriend Tara ;) who was loving it on the jet ski.
