Dakhla Wave coaching & PKRA comp

3/27/2014

Picture
I had an amazing month out in Dakhla, Morocco where I ran a 10 day Wave Coaching camp in conjunction with Kite Morocco (see write up here) followed by competing on the PKRA World Tour where they held the only scheduled KiteWave contest for 2014.
As such 49 men entered the waves which is a massive record and more than the Freestyle which had 47 men. This meant they had to run Qualifiers with only the Top 12 IKA ranked men pre-qualifying into the main event. This was a pretty tight system with the likes of Mitu, Airton, myself and many other top wave riders having to qualify.
The first day of waves was Wednesday when we all went to Oum laboiur and started competition around 1.30pm after it took a while to get everyone there and the stuff set up to go. The good thing was as the tide came up it started to pump with nice head high sets reeling down the perfect right hand point.

With only one race crew and just 3 judges, they ran 4 heats of 9 people on the water for 10 mins, with the best 3 from each heat advancing to the main draw. Pretty tight and impossible to get any good waves and even for the 3 judges sat in a bus to see those waves, but I was pleased to make it through.
In round 1, I had No. 1 seed Pedro and Airton, so pretty tough and again only 10 mins to catch 2 good waves which is tricky on a super settie point break.
I felt I rode really well and seeing both Airton and Pedro fall on some good waves thought I had the win? But no I placed 3rd with only 0.33 seperating all of us and on looking at the scores there was a massive split between judges with 1 giving me a 6.9 and the other a 5 with the 3rd a 6.0. That's the problem with having only 3 judges and the reason you need 5 so you can drop the high and low to get the average, which means if one judge misses something you do not lose out.
So that meant into round 2 where I faced a local Moroccan guy. This happened the next day in smaller waves but still nicely rippable. Again I felt I rode well and coming to the beach was told by loads of people I had the win easily including the guys girlfriend, Kirsty Jones. Yet again I lost and looking at my scores they had what I thought was my best wave by far as only my 3rd best. Seems they weren't scoring the inside section as they couldn't see without turning round in the bus!
So that was it for me. The next rounds went down with some great riding but also some more dubious judging. The PKRA really needs to sort their act out if they are serious about running the World Wave Champs and have a seperate crew with dedicated surf judges so that they can run at the same time as the freestyle rather than just an add on!!!!
Well done to Keahi and Moona who were both ripping and deserved the wins.

For the next three days all us wave riders were stuck at the lagoon where the freestyle was running, as Dakhla Attitude would not take us to the point. Didn't bother us that much as it was small apart from sat & sun when it was pumping again! Still the wind was howling, so we all did some strapless freestyle and then watched the freestyle finals. Aaron made 3rd in the singles but unfortunately crashed a few too many tricks in the doubles when it was blowing 30+ knts. Well done to Marc & Gisela who took the wins riding with the most power and landing the most tricks in the super chop!

So that's it for World Wave comps for 2014 unless the PKRA sort it out? Shame as with that many entries it shows their is the demand for a Wave Tour, I would really like to improve on my 17th place!

Thanks to all the friendly people that helped me out during my time in Dakhla :)

My KSP World Tour 2011-12 Highligh video

2/18/2013

A week of being stuck in ill allowed me to edit down my 2 years competing on the KSP World Kitesurfing Wave Tour to 4 mins of action.
Had some great waves in Mauritius twice and in Peru. Shame we got unlucky in Cape Verde, Portugal & Ireland.
I'd like to thank everyone who made this possible. Especially my sponsors-
North kiteboarding, ION, Freeriders & Pasty Adventures.
For 2013 I am planning on some exciting kitesurfing trips to score amazing waves in far out places.
If the KSP goes back to some epic wave spots in 2014 I may try and compete again but for now I've had enough of sitting around and using up my valuable holiday time and hard earned money for nothing! Instead I am going to spend my holiday time searching for new kitesurf waves and concentrate on making money at home with the school & fishing in Cornwall so that I can get away next winter.
Hope you like it
Cheers
Lee

Here I am in Achill Island for the 3rd stop of the KSP World Tour for kitesurfing in waves. So far we’ve had a couple of days of rights. Up at Easkey where ive wanted to kite for ages we had some waves although in bit bumpy and blown out in 40mph easterlys. Next we went down to Bellmullet and found a nice outer bombie throwing a few short cheeky ones.

Looks like comp is on early tomorrow with a 6am rise to drive to Elly beach on Bellmullet.

Im up in heat 3 against my good mate Barrell Master, Mauricio Pedreira and ASP surfer Pedro Henrique both from Brasil, so im gonna use the cold and rain to my advantage and put the backside attack through to round 3.

Tune in live at www.kspworldtour.com and catch all the pics from Joe at  his JNP Facebook page

I’M off for a Guinness

9th KSP One Eye

Round 1 = big choppy & raining
I am super pleased with my riding at One Eye this year finishing in 9th place only losing to event winner Patri in the non elimination Round 1 and then narrowly missing out to 3rd place finisher Sebastian in Round 5.
The highlights for me were beating local trials winner Jerome in round 2 as he absolutely kills it at his home spot and then beating 2 x World Champ Abel Lago in round 3.
The Barrel session on Saturday was also epic. By far the best hour i've ever had in the water doing any sport!
Out of the 2 weeks I was there we only had 2 days without wind and on these days the surf was epic. We found an amazing right on the south coast which was 8-10ft heaving barrels and the other day we surfed One eye for some amazing left hand barrels with only my friends.
On the water I used the 2013 North Rebels in sizes 6,7 & 9 and i can safely say these new kites are amazing. For boards on the smaller days I used the 2013 North Pro 6'2 and on the bigger days I used my Resin8 Shotgun 6'0 which i designed with Carl Welton specifically for One Eye after last year and it worked super well!
Surfing i used the North Pro, Resin8 Tokoro 6'3 and my trusty Ultimate Style 6'6.

Big congrats to all the winners especially Patri & Ninja for killing it and standing out from the other competitors every time they went on the water and a big up to Barrel Master Mauricio for taking out the Barrel comp. So pleased one of our crew won it ;)

Big thanks to North Kiteboarding for getting me there and to my other sponsors for their continued support- Ion, Freeriders, Resin8, Pasty Adventures.
Also thanks to the organizers for such a great event and the local crew at Club Mistral for being so friendly and helping our little crew out with anything we needed. You guys are awesome and make it such a great place to spend time ;)

Also I'd like to thank my family and friends for all the support they give my
me both when I'm away and at home.
I couldn't do it without you.

Loads of epic pics and vid coming soon.

Peace

Through to Round 3 KSP One Eye

I am through to Round 3 here in Muaritius after some nice waves in round 2 scoring a 5 & 6.17 against local trails winner Jerome Bonieux. I was riding the 2013 Rebel 6m as it was super windy and big around 12ft with some huge sets of up to 20ft faces. In the morning for round 1 it was super choppy and I couldn't find any decent waves in the 3 man heat which left me in 2nd with Patri advancing to round 4.
Today i am up against 2 x World Champ Abel Lago, but feeling confident. Sun is shining  and its looking good for some epic waves. Should be on around 2.30 which is 11.30 uk time.
Had some epic surfs here so far, will post pics and more tales from the tour up soon. got to go get Mauricio and Juan up now and have a session at One Eye before the comp starts.
Big thanks to my sponsors, North Kiteboarding for helping me out and making such a good kite. The 2013 Rebel is rocking.
Happy waves

KSP Cape Verde

Wave hunters of the KSP
I travelled out a few days before the event
started on 2nd December with the forecast showing some promise of a swell hitting just in time for the
event to start. Having been to Sal a few times before and getting skunked when I was there for a month for my 30th birthday a few years back, I was a little weary of the swell being too north to get into Ponta Preta.

Arriving to my friends Phil and Vicky of Cape Verde Imports, I managed to get straight out for some left hand waves at Punta Leme at the bottom of town past the Angulo windsurf centre. After this I went to check in at the Farol hotel which Mitu had arranged with an amazing deal of All Inclusive for 25 euro a night. Thanks! Gorging myself on some amazing food I hooked up with the Brazilians, Ian Glaza & Mauricio Padreira and Portugese champ Nuno Stru and decided to rent a truck together to make the most of any swell we could find. Driving to get the car in an Alluger, the guys ended up negotiating with the driver to be ours for the duration and got it for less than the price of the hire car including driver, Jaouso and fuel. Nice!

So the first day of the comp saw no waves at Ponta Preta and the call was made for a lay day. We all then headed North to my favourite spot on the island, Curral Jouel to see if there was a wave. It turned out to be small but fun and easy enough to launch on the rocks, which is impossible when its over 3ft and the reason the event could not run there. We all had some fun waves on 12-9m kites and it turned out Jaouso was good fun and keen to film and take pictures. Perfect!

Saturday dawned with magic seaweed showing decent swell with a
large period but with a lot of north in it. We had the riders meeting at 8am at
Ponta Preta with the occasional overhead wave breaking and light winds. We were
put on hold for the wind to come up and the first heat started around 11am. I
was up in heat 3 with the wind super light, I borrowed Sky’s new 12m Fuse and
rode my 5’7 Resin8 Scoop. With my knowledge of the break I had 5 fairly average
waves which were all of the sets that came through but then with 3 minutes to
go of the 15, the head judge called the heat off stating it was too inconsistent. Shame as I was winning by 4.5 points! This turned out to be it for the contest proper which was a massive shame for me as some of the riders beating me in the rankings had never gone right and I was confident of a good result on my preferred direction which would of moved me considerably higher up the rankings! Still we all jumped in for a surf and had fun until dark, when we went back to our all inclusive palace.

Sunday and yet again we were at Ponta Preta at 8am, but this time it was almost totally flat. The call was for an expression session at Secrets at the top of the island. Knowing it would take a few hours for them to set up, the real wave crew, now joined by Spanish rider Diego Anta, headed all the way to the top and a pumping Curral Jouel. Our plan was to have a quick hour before riding the 3km downwind to Secrets for the expression session with Jaouso driving down to meet us. Needless to say with sets approaching double overhead and only 5 of us out on 7m kites, we ended up riding for nearer 3 hours and by the time we made it to Secrets, we had missed our heats and they were onto the semis. Watching the action while we ate lunch we then sped back for the second session and were greeted with more offshore wind and perfect glassy waves. 7 hours of riding with just friends in great waves really made the trip worth while, especially as most of the other riders were all moaning about the lack of waves! Big congrats to Bear Karry who won the expression session.

Monday we were yet again meeting at 8am even though no waves were
forecast. The call was expression session at Kite Beach. This turned out to be
mostly jumping, right next to the beach in Onshore winds. The locals showed
everyone how it’s done and Airton took the win with some amazing strapless
tricks while Kirsty showed that the girls can do some strapless jumps too!

With no more waves forecast for the foreseeable future and an upcoming  strike by Tap Air, the contest director decided to call the event off meaning most people could change their flights and fly home instead of being stranded for another 2 weeks. I managed to book a new flight back to the UK and left the next day after a great beach party at Mitu’s centre on the beach in front of the Hotel.

With everyone getting equal points for the event, The top 3 men for the year are – Airton, Mitu & Guilly while the women are – Innes, Marie & Kristin. I ended up 10th which is ok but definitely gives me plenty to work on for next year and my goal of Top 5.

Big congrats to 2011 Wave World Champions - Airton Cozzolino & Innes Correia and to the whole KSP Crew for forming an amazing tour and pushing the sport in the right direction.

I would like to thank my sponsors-
North Kiteboarding, Resin8 Surfboards, Freeirders, West wetsuits, Wiley X & the BKSA for all the support throughout the year and Sportif for the help with my flight to Mauritius. Also Tara and my whole family, whom I couldn’t do it without!

Have a great Christmas and an amazing 2012

9th KSP Pacasmayo, Peru

11/14/2011

Picture
I recently got back from an epic comp in Peru followed by a week of getting barreled in Lobitos.
Pretty pleased with my 9th place which has put me in 8th on the IKA official ranking with just the Cape Verde event to go next month. Still should of gone through to the quarters as had the highest wave score of round 4 but got a little hung up on my backup wave which the judges said after the event, cost me 1 point and i only lost by 0.34!
Still Pacasmayo is an amazing place with super friendly and welcoming people and of course super long waves. We were staying at the El Faro adventure resort, which is a great place with lovely wodden cabanas and super cool staff who even pump and Had some amazing surfs with one morning catching a wave from the top of the point all the way back to the hotel. Sky measured the distance after on google and it was 1.25 miles. Sick!
and i did this about 15 times surfing and 30 times kiting during the 2 weeks i was there in waves in the 6-8ft range.
Light wind was the name of the game the whole time and i only used the 2012 North Rebel 11m on 25m lines along with my Resin8 Scoops in size 6'0 and 5'7.
These boards were perfect for the wave here and so impressed by the feel. the 5'7 is a magic board and i suggest you get one before they run out!!!
The comp was won by Guilly Brandao (brasil) 2010 world champ and Milla Ferreria (brasil) who were both ripping and definately had the right tactics for this wave of waiting for the good ones. Guilly only rode 2 waves in the final which is risky if you fall but paid off for him and he killed it with some super critical backside turns.
After the comp I went to Lobitos for a week, pics and write up to come once the mags have chosen what they want.
Pics from the comp below.
Stay tuened for the Ponta Preta pro in Cape Verde starting 2nd Dec. Watch it live at www.kspworldtour.com
Big thanks to my sponsors-
North, Resin8, Rip Curl, Freeriders, Wiley X, BKSA
